Pennies to the Dollar

My new friend Jaclyn Castro mentioned something to me on the last day we were able to hang out this past weekend. We were rockin’ it pretty hard at the Hotel Del Coronado and finally made our trek back to the hotel at around 3am or so. The pearls of wisdom were flying from every which way, and I was able to capture a few and write them down in my cell phone as they came along..

Here is one of them that I really enjoy and think everyone should apply to their lives: Never Pass up a Penny.

Ok, does that mean that we should pick up EVERY single penny that we ever see, not necessarily the point I’m trying to make here. What I am talking about is this: Just because something that has a perceived value of VERY little, that doesn’t mean we should pass on it. Because as we all know, 100 pennies equals a dollar, and a dollar is something that we all want to have. Everyone reading this — be honest with yourself here, if you saw a dollar bill lying in the street, would you not stoop to grab it, maybe even chase it a little as the wind tried to steal it away. Perhaps you chase it for a half a block and it gets sucked down a gutter, it is lost. And you just wasted all that time and energy chasing it! For nothing! But the pennies, well they’re just sitting there waiting for someone to claim them, the wind won’t even budge them no matter how hard it tries.

Pick up the pennies. They will all start to add up to something that is greater than the original parts.

So what am I talking about, what exactly is a penny if not an actual copper coin you may find near a gutter? I am talking about opportunities. Connections, referrals that may seem like “small game”, a conversation with the person sitting next to you on the plane / bus, someone who you think would NEVER work in this industry – you can’t know that, they may have just been laid off, or they are having to move their families into an apartment, never be sure about someone until you give them the chance to say “No Thanks”.

There are pennies everywhere around us, I am slowly starting to realize this and I have to tell you it is adding up to multiple dollars very quickly, and the connections I am engaging in rather than brushing aside are paying me in ways that can’t even be measured. Try this out, this was a fun tip from my friend and mentor Jim Anderson. Keep 10 pennies in your right pocket at all times, when you “pick up a penny” in life or business, shift one over to your left pocket.

For every penny you have left at the end of the day you have to put a dollar in a jar and donate that to your non-profit / church of choice. Or whatever you decide your penalty to be, make it yours, make it effective. Just be you.

Cheers,

-Clay

CLAY! You’re awesome and this is an awesome blog!
For every penny I see someone pass is an even bigger
opportunity for ME…or for someone else willing to
“stoop” down. It’s not that very difficult to take that
little action step. As a matter of fact, it’s super simple.
But make sure to use your legs and not your back :)
Hey, it DOES matter how we get things done, right? lol!

Pass the penny, guys!…Or keep it in your left pocket!

Thank you Jackie! I agree! Using your legs is so much better than your back! lol :)

Hey Clay,

It is the simple thoughts and principles that go a long way… I totally agree that we should not pass up on any penny laying around, sitting next to you, driving slow in front of you, or just dropped into your hand. You never know if that penny will turn into a one hundred dollar day.

Jax, you are too funny with calling out the “stoop” :)

Thanks Clay for bringing the truths to light,
